EHCP Assessment and Report

Many children and young people require additional support and funding to support their needs in education settings. This is outlined in a document called an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Children who have Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) may require specific advice and provision provided by a Speech and Language Therapist that can then be added to their EHCP.

EHCP Assessment

The EHCP assessment process is similar in format to an initial Speech and Language Therapy assessment (see assessment page for further information) but with a much more thorough look at all aspects of the child's SLCN in order to gather enough information for a detailed report and appropriate targets and provison.

The EHCP assessment session can last up to 2 hours (broken town into shorter sessions if required). There may be occasions where additional assessment sessions or setting observations are required. These will be discussed and agreed if needed.

Following assessment, a detailed report will be provided containing a summary of assessment findings, suggested targets and provision (amount and type of support) needed, which will then go into the child's EHCP document for local NHS Speech and Language Therapy services or Local Authority funded independent Speech and Language Therapists to provide.

For further advice or information about EHCPs and how Speech and language Therapists contribute to and work with them, consult your local NHS Speech and Language Therapy service, school SENCO, or Local Authority SEND department.
