Therapy

Speech and Language Therapy sessions take place in an appropriate setting and focus on targets and advice given following assessment. They can be one or two demonstration and review sessions or regular blocks of therapy followed by brief consolidation breaks.

Demonstrations and Reviews

These sessions occur less frequently than blocks of therapy and focus on providing parents/carers and other adults supporting the child or young person with the knowledge and skills needed to work on the targets provided following the assessment.

There can be more than one demonstration session if required and people working with the child can request further demonstrations or support at any time.

Reviews occur at the request of parents/carers when they feel that there has been progress made, or they are not seeing progress and would like to get specific advice or updated targets from the Speech and Language Therapist.

Both reviews and demonstration sessions usually last between 60-90 minutes

Blocks of Therapy

These sessions occur on a regular ongoing basis that will be agreed between the Speech and Language Therapist and parents/carers following the assessment.

Sessions are usually once per week or once per fortnight and last between 45-60 minutes which includes discussion time at the end of the session to summarise activities completed and areas to focus on between sessions.

Every so often and if appropriate, there may be a brief consolidation break between sessions to identify how well the skills and activities worked on have been implemented and generalised by the child and adults supporting them. The length and frequency of these breaks will be discussed as needed and only if they will be beneficial to the child's communication.
